What is the best brand of tents or one tent in general?
I go on a trip every summer in the desert of New Mexico. My first year the weather was pretty plain, hot in the day time, colder at night. But last year it did that but also 2 nights we we're there was torrential downpour and super high winds which the winds continued into the next day which left a blanket of dirt over everything in our tent. We had a Walmart brand tent and it worked fairly well the amount of rain we had but during the wind it was a bit bad.
I'm looking for one thats big enough for 2 people sleeping(one cot and one sleeping bag), 2 suitcases, and enough room to change. Which usually means we get about a 4 person tent for 2 to fit well. Any suggestions?
You should look into canvas cabin tents such as Trek, Kodiak and Montana. Although expensive ($500 and up) they are roomy and the heavy material will help prevent dust and wind from penetrating. The downside is they are quite heavy and bulky, so they are only suitable for car camping.
Another option is to look at double-wall, 4-season tents from Black Diamond, Eureka, MSR or The North Face. These tents are also expensive ($350+) and do not offer either the space or the tight seal that a good canvas cabin tent will provide, but they are lighter and smaller to pack, making them suitable for backpacking.
