How does high temperature affect the performance of long distance running?
I was running a marathon in high temperature (30 degrees Celsius +) and my time was really awful. I felt heavy and easily exhausted, gasping for air. I have been a long distance runner for years and was well prepared. Dehydration was also not the problem (I think) since there were water stations every 2 km and, in addition, I was carrying a Camelback with a 3 liter content. Can somebody give me an explanation why the body does not perform as well in high temperatures in endurance sports? Is there a rule which would establish a relation between temperature and marathon time?
In additon, it was not only hot but also very humid (over 90% humidity).
When it's hot, you need even MORE water. Your body has to work harder to lose heat, and it will sweat more to try to get the heat out. If it's humid, you're not really going to lose that heat and like it or not, you're going to have to slow down. If it's not humid, the extra water will help you sweat and lose some of the heat. But make sure if you're marathoning that you get some sodium and vinegar into your system to prevent cramping).
Personally I find the camelbacks to be a nuisance. They're hot on your back, the water doesn't stay cool for very long even with ice, and there's not much water, certainly not enough to justify wearing it if you've got water stops every couple of miles.
Congrats to you on doing the marathon in those temps AT ALL. I was considering the Hotter Than Hell Half in Austin, TX this August but this heat right now (in Dallas) is hard-core. I find that I have to almost double my water intake during training runs (I train in the Chisolm trail park because round trip it's about 11 miles).
Cool runnings to you.
Peace
