I am about to start a back yard poultry for eggs .could you give me some information on how to do this best ?
I have a peace of land on my back yard.iam about to start a poultry in the outskirt of freetown in Sierra Leone.I would want to know the building design suitable for racing chicken.The best egg producing hens.How to raise them to get maximum production.
Let's see,
Henhouse:
1. Make it small
2. Make an area for storing food, extra feeders, etc.
3. Make it so that there's ventilation, but no racoons, possums, squirrels, etc. can get in (mice are ok, hens can take one out with a single peck
Chickens:
1. Buff Orpingtons-Extremely hardy. Lay well in the winter. Lay well after a scare. Lay brown eggs.
2. Black Australorps- A little picky. Lay brown (?) eggs
3. White Leghorns- Normally lay white eggs. I had two for awhile and they were pretty skittish. I thought they were pretty good layers.
More on chickens:
1. Try not to get a rooster (the hens will lay eggs without a rooster) because they are a nusciance and won't shut up. They crow all day.
2. Keep your hens away from domestic turkeys (because they can transmit diseases to each other)
3. Freshen up their water every few days
4. Give them a light during the winter
5. Believe it or not, 4-H clubs (or anything like that) are a good spot to find information about stuff like that.
6. Start out with no more than 15 for the first time. 10 is a good number.
7. Get non-medicated feed.
8. Make a good hen yard for them
Note: Hens tend to die more in the winter than in the summer.
