Do you think transgendered teenagers should get their own bathroom and changing room?
I've recently read of this twelve year old girl who is biologically male, who got her own bathroom and changing room.
I don't understand why. Is it too protect her from bullies? Do you think it's right?
Sounds like some people feel envious of people getting their "own stuff" because it's for others and not for themselves. People with mobility disabilities also get bathrooms for themselves or at least reserved toilets for them to use. If there is only one person on a wheelchair at your school, will you oppose it because only one person will use it? And that person is not you? Sounds very immature.
Having seen other kids be violent and abusive to GLBT classmates I would rather this person have a safe bathroom of her/his own than to risk abuse and trauma courtesy of other teenagers. Unless those who complain have gender or genital issues they cannot understand how intimate parts affect and shame people who have problems. Sure, we can get on a high horse and say "hey, get over it" but then we should say get over it to anyone who is different or needs some support.
Another bathroom in the school is not going to affect anyone who is not transgender, and it will mean a lot to the person who is transgender. So where's the problem?
About the reason for it, I would guess a big part of it is to respect this person's intimacy and ensure that he/she gets a neutral space where there won't be any stares or comments. Because anyone who's in high school knows that there will be comments, stares and even attacks. Don't kid yourselves thinking that because you wouldn't do it no one else would. It is also a way of acknowledging that she/he doesn't have to chose to go into the man's bathroom because anatomically she's male but otherwise female, or go to the woman's bathroom because she'sbehaviorallyy female but anatomically male. It could be other way around too. It must be hard to decide what is more important to the people who are around, the physical aspect or the mental aspect of your gender.
The only problem is that people will be able to identify this person once the bathroom is there and privacy outside of the bathroom will be hard to maintain. In any case, I wouldn't want to be in that person's shoes, high school is hell and its twice the nightmare if you have issues of your own that are out of control.
