Is a tire pressure monitoring system rebuild kit necessary?
I am pricing new tires for my car, which has a tire pressure monitoring system. I notice on one quote a "TPMS Rebuild Kit," which replaces parts of the sensor susceptible to wear or corrosion. Is this really necessary when putting on new tires (my car is almost 3 years old)? I could save $36 without the TPMS Rebuild Kit.
Not sure if a battery is included. Thanks for mentioning that.
You didn't mention if it includes a new battery. If it does, I'd say that might be a good idea. Expected battery life is 7-10 years.
If not, there's not much to wear out otherwise. Corrosion isn't much of a problem, as long as you don't leave the caps off.
Keep in mind also, that there are TPMS systems that don't use sensors on the rim, but operate off the ABS, and use no batteries.

The type with direct sensors has been mandated (in the US) only since 2008. New style sensors are being developed, which don't use batteries. But they also appear to be an indirect style.
Re; Additional Details
I should also mention there is a (direct) type where the sensor is held in place by a band around the rim, further inside the tire. Other than the battery, I can't think of much else that would be replaceable, except the cap and valve stem core (which are special to TPMS) on the type where the sensor is at the bottom of the valve stem.
Thanks for visiting!
