Best backpack for a tall person?
I'm 6'4" and have yet to find a pack long enough for my torso. My torso length is 24 inches long. I am in need of a pack that holds enough for 3-5 days of camping/hiking in the backcountry.
i'm glad you know your torso length. that's valuable information. i'd suggest calling major retailers (REI, EMS, etc) and explaining your problem. they may be able to find suitable models quickly. looks like possibly Osprey and Granite Gear offer models that may fit you, but you'll really want to try them on first. good luck.
unfortunately, you may have to go with a custom pack. depending on what you want, this could be reasonably affordable or crazy expensive. my friend Brian runs a company called ULA Equipment and they offer a pack called the Catalyst in an extra large (torsos 23+ inches). unfortunately his shop is closed for the next three months, but his packs are always well-liked so the wait may be worth it. the website is http://www.ula-equipment.com
an extremely expensive option is McHale packs. they have a loyal, almost cultish following. http://www.mchalepacks.com/
many small manufacturers would probably be able to make a custom model for you. most of the folks i know are on the lightweight/ultralight end of the spectrum, so if you pack heavy they might not be the right choice for you. i coudn't begin to name all the cottage manufacturers here in the US (plus those that operate in other areas of the world), but if you were to post this question over at backpacking.net you might get quite a list of makers. good luck.
good luck & i hope this helps.
