Physics How fast must you throw and object upwards so that is peaks at exactly 50 m?
How fast must you throw and object upwards so that is peaks at exactly 50 m ?
I don't understand if the final velocity would be zero and what equation to use
final velocity would be 0, because at its peak height it momentarily stops before changing direction.
Can use two methods to get answer, conservation of energy or kinematic equation for distance.
conservation of energy.
KE = PE
(1/2)mv^2 = mgh
v^2 = 2gh
v = sqrt(2*9.8*50)
v = 31.3m/s
kinematic
d = (1/2)at^2 + v(o)t + d(o) = (1/2)at^2 + v(o)t + 0
also, v(f) = v(o)+at, 0 = v(o) + at, v(o) = -at,
d = (1/2)at^2 + (-at)t
d = (1/2)at^2 - at^2
d = (-1/2)at^2
t = sqrt(-2d/a). a = -9.8, d = 50
t = 3.19sec
v(o) = -at = -(-9.8)(3.19) = 31.2m/s.
answers are only different because of rounding error.
