Why are my rats nesting all of a sudden?
Lately, my rats have been filling their hammock with bedding from the bottom of their cage, newspaper pieces I give them, and shredding apart tissue boxes they have access to for hidey holes. I know nesting is normal, but I've had them for almost a year, and while they've stolen random pieces of paper before, it has never been to this extent.
They are both female, and I have had them since they were babies. Just trying to understand why they chose the last week to make a newspaper mound when I have offered them bits of fleece and cotton before (during winter months).
My suggestions would be that they are either too cold or their maternal instincts are kicking in. If either rat has had a litter before or even if they haven't, they may just be heeding nature's call to say that they should be having babies by this point in their life. I haven't experienced this with any of my females as they've all obsessivly nested since I got them. The fact that you've had them both for a year means that obviously neither one is pregnant. I would also hope that you can adequately tell the difference between male and female adult rats (as it's quite obvious just from a quick glance). I can assure you it's nothing to worry about 
just enjoy the fact that tissues are providing your girls with a sense of purpose and entertainment
