Slumberjack or Marmot sleeping bag?
I have narrowed my sleeping back search down to 2 women-specific mummy bags. One is a Slumberjack on sale for $70.00 that weighs 3lbs 2oz and the other is a Marmot that is on sale for $90.00 and weighs 3lbs 14oz. Both are rated to 15 degrees and are synthetic fill. Any advice on which would be better for the price?? Thanks!
Slumberjack is about the first rung up the ladder for "real" backpacking gear. A lot of car camping bags are cheaper and sturdier. To be fair though, backpacking sleeping bags are a whole different animal because they have to be durable and reliable AND they have to be lightweight and compressible. This is no easy feat.
If you aren't backpacking, just get a big ol' Coleman that weighs a hundred pounds. You will never buy another one, and it will cost you about half either of these.
I have seen a LOT of Slumberjack zippers fail. I worked for a therapeutic intervention with teens for years and we used all Slumberjacks and I owned one myself. Their zippers always jumped the track. On the plus they are roomy and warm. My personal bag was a 0 deg mummy with synthetic fill. Blue with gold trim and gray inside.
Of course, it depends on how nicely you treat your gear, and if that weight difference is important, AND most importantly probably...where you buy it and what is their policy for returns...if you want to deal with a blowout of gear in the middle of a trip. This sucks.
You won't have any "trail cred" with a Slumberjack among serious hikers. And Marmot is a much more reputable brand. I would go ahead and spend for the upgrade. My guess is, also, that you will experience more savings off regular price with the Marmot, that is, a Marmot on sale for 90 is a better deal than a Slumberjack on sale for 70. Actually that Slumberjack price isn't very great. I think the one I had for zero degrees was 100 dollars.
Marmot.
