what does it mean for an hospital to have Level I Trauma Center and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit?
Basically hospitals rank their capabilities, equipment and staff ( surgeons, specialists, etc. ) by level1 being the best, Level 2 being adequate to handle most situations, level 3 and so forth. A level 1 trauma center would mean it has met certain criteria set forth for a level 1 trauma center, like an in house 24/7 trauma (surgical) team, trauma and critical care trained nurses, OR's available 24/7, cat scan, etc... So any Type of trauma could be transported there by Paramedics, i.e. Gunshot wounds, stabbings, the worst motor vehicle accidents, falls from any height, etc.
I know it is a way Paramedics and EMTs determine which is the most apprpriate hospital to take a patient to based on how extensive their injuries are or how serious of an accidnt the person wass involved in
