Can we rely on psychological lab experiments?
"the dominance that classical learning theory has maintaned over psychology for the last seventy years. Because learning theorists have focused their attention on stimulus response relationships, like the ringing of a bell causing salivation in Pavlov's dogs, the study of reward has been restricted to what can be controlled in the laboratory. Recently, however, some scientists have questioned the relevance of classical theory ...about the real world-a world in which stimuli and rewards are not always clear."
( "Satisfaction", Gregory Berns)
No, we can not. What a theory may say is not always true. Everything has a different answer. When dealing with the human way of coming to a conclusion, there are very few hard and fast rules. Everyone is different, and every situation is going to be met in a different way.
One very true example is the idea of the way children are punished for having done something wrong. The current belief is that to use physical punishment will instill in the child the idea that the way to resolve conflict is through hurting the other person. From society that can be seen to be untrue. My generation had the "belt" applied for a means of punishment, but we are not nearly as violent as those that have come after us. As a group, we carry more respect for authority than those who have come after us. The model of the psychologists say that the opposite should be true, yet, it isn't.
