Okay to put insect repellent on GoreTex?
My sleeping bag has a GoreTex shell (Bivy sack), and I'd love to get some kind of insect repellent on it to keep ticks, etc., from crawling in while I'm asleep.
Will bug spray/lotion ruin the GoreTex? Anyone have experience doing this? Any suggestions on what to use?
I don't know... according to the Armed Forces Pest Management Board (Technical Guide No. 36), "the water-repellent properties of Gore-Tex are also reduced by DEET"

Has anyone successfully used Permethrin on Gore-Tex?
The GORE-TEX® membrane is the heart of all GORE-TEX® products. It contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule, which makes the GORE-TEX® membrane completely waterproof from the outside, while allowing perspiration to escape from the inside. An oleophobic, or oil-hating, substance is integrated into the membrane, preventing the penetration of body oils and insect repellent that could otherwise affect the membrane.
