How can I keep my dog cool?
I practically live on a mountain so there is a Nature Park right behind me and it has a bark covered trail which I run every day with my dog. Typically he can go 90+ minutes before getting tired, but today he began heavily panting after about 45 minutes due to the heat. I go during the coolest times of the day, but even that seems too hot for him. Usually I go running with a Camelbak so I was wondering if I poured cold water on his back if it would keep him cool and allow him to run with me longer. He is a Pit Bull so he has short hair. Is there anything that I can do to keep him cool while we run?
Also, is the bark on the trail bad for his paws?
They do have foot wear for dogs. Mostly they are to keep snow from caking up between their pads. But there maybe some for running. Let your dog drink often, and wetting his back isn't a bad idea either. Dogs are lower to the ground than us bipeds so the absorb the heat radiating up from the earth. The ground is coolest in the morning. Putting a cool wet towel on his belly will cool him off quicker than water on the back. His major organs are near the skin there and this area is absorbing the heat more too. Pits don't have much insulation either in fur or fat, so they are real sensitive to temp. extremes. He sounds like a great running companion.
