Conservatives: what do you have against Multiculturalism?
I never understood this. you guys pretend like this country always had one christian, english speaking culture when that could never be farther from the truth. compare Chinook whalers on the North Shore of Alaska to French Cajuns from the Louisiana bayou. see? natural, American made multiculturalism.
so why do you guys pretend like this country has always had one single culture, when this country has been multicultural from the beginning?
(FYI: the constitution was written in English for brevity and because more spoke english than German or French, not because they somehow thought the language was superior--it was all about ease of understanding; afterall, why don't you think there is an official language in the constitution?)
People on Yahoo Answers need to stop phrasing questions as attacks.
As an economics student, I have never seen a sound rational cost-benefit that points to illegal immigration as detrimental to our economy. (Ask me and I'll explain with numbers)
You simply cannot stop illegal immigration. What you can do is create incentives to promote legal immigration or open up trade and labor barriers between Mexico and the US. (please refer to Thomas Friedman's Economics to find out why this would actually benefit the US)
Also, you can create incentives for immigrants to become part of the American community instead of cutting themselves off.
Immigration is not an Economic Problem, Its a social one. There is an ugly downward spiral that starts from the moment an immigrant steps foot here.
1) Immigrant is met with suspicion or prejudice.
2) Immigrant seeks protection from their own kind.
3) Immigrant cuts themselves off from society, cannot practice new language or customs.
4) Native Citizen perceives this as "not wanting to mix in," becomes more prejudiced.
5) Immigrant senses more pressure, entrenches themselves even more.
I would venture to say that 90% of the immigrants I have worked with want to become citizens and learn English. I would go further to say that those same 90% are scared silly of white people and feel oppressed.
