If you have done much backpack camping in bear country, you have seen scat. When you see a fresh deposit......?
....on the trail you are hiking, do you keep going or turn around?
You can tell the difference between black bear and brown: brown bear scat smells like pepper and has bells in it. 
I keep going. I'd probably be a little more cautious and make more noise. Besides, odds are fair that I'll encounter a bear somewhere along my hike, and I have no real idea where the one who dropped his load went off. If I turned around every time I saw a bear or bear sign I'd probably be walking in circles.
